Austria: Innsbruck, St Anton & Kitzbuhel

Austria is absolutely a skiing paradise. Thousands of kilometers of perfectly prepared ski runs offer superb conditions for all skiers – no matter whether you look for an easy slope, or difficult runs. Those, who prefer freeride in deep snow or skiing on wild slopes with a local skiing guide will definitely not be disappointed.

Innsbruck
Chosen as the site of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympic Games, Innsbruck considers skiing part of its city’s life, and is one of the few resorts in Europe with a snow guarantee. There are not that many cities in the world that combine a mix of urban and mountain wonderland. Innsbruck in the winter offers a tempting selection of skiing and snowboarding in a variety of places. Free buses shuttle you from downtown to the nearby ski areas. Among them Igls and Mutters will appeal to the novice and intermediate skiers with long, wide-open trails; Patscherkofel and Hafelekar, reached by a series of lifts at the edge of town will offer steep, challenging runs for the more advanced skiers. The city boasts naturally divided terrain, mountain peaks, valleys and picturesque mountain lakes at altitudes ranging from 900 to 1,690m.

There are also several snowboard parks in the area including one at Axamer Lizum with half-pipes and natural jumps and one at the Stubai Glacier with a half-pipe, jumps, and a snowboard racecourse. There are 75 up to date ski lifts that serve up to 270 km of immaculately managed ski runs and open up a wide-ranging back country skiing terrain.

Over 800 years old, this Tyrolian capital displays its historic treasures for all to see. Furthermore the city has a great infrastructure, which allows non-skiers to explore the walking trails, toboggan and enjoy a variety of indoor amenities. A walk through its streets will take you by the famous Golden Roof, the Ambras Castle, imperial palaces, theatres, opera houses, museums, and much more. Combined with the spectacular natural beauty surrounding it, Innsbruck is hard to beat.

St Anton
Considered to be one of the best high-alpine ski resorts in the world, St. Anton is renowned for its challenging skiing, spectacular scenery and lively après-ski. The long, exhilarating descents from the Valluga, scenic valley runs and world class off-piste skiing attract keen skiers year after year. Also included in the Arlberg liftpass are the exclusive resorts of Lech, Zürs, Stuben and St. Christoph.

St Anton holds probably the greatest tradition in Austria. Here was the first skiing club ever founded and here the first championship took place. Today, over 280 kilometres of perfectly prepared slopes await skiers every year. Around 180 kilometres of unbeaten ski runs should be more than enough for those, who search for stronger adventure. Three main villages of St. Anton, St. Christoph and Stuben offer a large choice of après ski activities.

Kitzbuhel
The fashionable resort of Kitzbühel has a large ski circuit covering 170km of pistes on two mountains, the Kitzbüheler Horn and the Hahnenkamm. Famous above all for the Men’s World Cup Downhill Race on the Hahnenkamm, this lively and sophisticated resort has something for everyone, from young to old and from beginner to expert.
It is so gently dubbed “˜Kitz’ for recognition and popularity. It is present on many Top Ten lists of the European ski destinations. It is a truly charming Tyrolean resort with cobblestone streets and painted buildings with the main part of town surrounded by the 12th century stonewalls – so common to the villages of the period. This area is the most challenging on the World Cup circuit. This event helps the resort to cultivate its reputation as an extraordinary place. Regular skiers, however, will find more than enough to satisfy their aspiration with testing their skills on many runs located in the 5 main ski areas surrounding the village. For the intermediate it is a paradise. A regional ski pass offers vast opportunities along 420 miles of designed slopes and 260 lifts.
