Japan
INTRODUCTION
Japan’s appeal is its unbelievable powder snow. Combined with experiencing its unique and friendly culture, Japan is one ski destination that makes it high on many skiers “˜must do’ list.
Niseko, Rusutsu and Furano are located on the sub-arctic northern island of Hokkaido, which receives an enormous amount of snow each season from the Siberian desert storm systems that march across the Sea of Japan from Russia with amazing regularity from November to March.
The larger areas of Hakuba (seven interlinked resorts) and Shiga Kogen (21 interlinked resorts) are on the main island of Honshu and both offer huge areas and great diversity of terrain.
Accommodation choices range from budget lodges and pensions with Japanese style bedding, right through to modern self contained apartments.
Why Ski Japan
The world’s best powder snow, snow monkeys, Japan’s unique culture and bathing in outdoor hot springs are among the many reasons a Japanese ski holiday is different from any other. Read on to discover why the world’s more adventurous skiers and snowboarders are heading to Japan!
Japanese Snow
Japan has some of the world’s deepest, lightest powder snow. Winds that blow from Siberia dump huge quantities of snow along the west coast of Japan. With water quality as low as 8% and annual snowfalls of up to 18 metres, gliding through chest deep Japanese snow is as good as it gets! With around 600 ski resorts its no surprise that there’s a lot of variety to be found in Japan, whether you’re looking for extreme powder, untouched backcountry, perfectly groomed slopes, or huge snow parks!
World’s Best Night Skiing
Because the Japanese people work long days, night skiing is popular and in Niseko most of the mountain is open until 9pm. Night skiing on deserted, knee deep powder covered runs after a day of snowfall is an exhilarating experience!
